What is Judo? Translated as the “gentle way” in English, Judo is a Japanese martial art, a competitive sport, and a method of self-defense. Developed originally for physical education, Judo aims to enhance the mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of practitioners. Judo was established in 1882 by Jigoro Kano and encompasses a range of techniques including throws, submissions, and immobilizations. Practitioners, known as Judoka, learn these techniques and are encouraged to apply them in unscripted practice sessions known as randori. Judo holds the distinction of being the most widely practiced individual sport globally. In terms of participation, it ranks second among all sports worldwide, with soccer holding the top spot. Additionally, Judo has achieved the status of an Olympic sport.
